Artist Bio:

Carolyn. L. Ladd is an abstract artist based in Phoenixville, PA. Ladd utilizes various media such as acrylics, ink, ceramics, spoken word, and everyday objects such as string and tea to explore movement, impermanence, and break down barriers and binaries both within and beyond. In 2023, Ladd developed a series of string painting techniques called “string theory” as an homage to Ladd’s experiences: as a scientist, violinist, and autistic person. “String Theory” is the language Ladd uses to capture motion, explore connection, create space, and study lifes transition states.

Artist Statement: Tea Party Meditations

My “Tea Party Meditations” series seeks answers to a simple question: how can the ritual of tea become a pathway to mindfulness, play and connection? Inspired by global tea cultures and nostalgic memories, I organically created this body of work after my daily yoga, meditation and tea practice. Tea itself became the literal backdrop: black and hibiscus tea stained the canvases, then the works evolved through my string painting techniques, ink and a sumi-e mindset. The collection balances contrasting elements and forces through a unified color palette. Following Tapies’ tradition of elevating everyday materials to spiritual significance, these abstract works invite viewers to discover how meditative play connects us to our world, others and ourselves.
